The Union Association of Heads of the Penitentiary Guard Corps (ASCCGP) carried out a total work stoppage this Monday to demand a new professional statute, payment of supplements and other demands, warning that the protest leaves the prisons “without command”.
The president of the ASCCGP, Hermínio Barradas, assured the Lusa news agency that the strike will be total and, “for the first time since April 25, 1974, The Portuguese prisons will be left without leaders and without command“, since there will be no minimum services, contrary to what happened on the first day of the strike, last Friday.
According to him, with the strike on Monday “the scenario will be different and unprecedented”, and the chains may be left “drift and without control” for the distribution of functions.
In a statement on the reasons for the strike, the ASCCGP said Inertia, apathy and contempt of the Ministry of Justice on the problems of the penitentiary system” and criticized the “option of the Government to continue ignoring the existence of an (…) lack (…) of unprecedented, undesirable and risky personnel”.
The objectives of the strike, according to the union association, are aimed at creating a new professional statute, regulating the performance evaluation of the prison guard corps, opening competitions for all categories, paying the prison security supplement and solving structural problems. in the prison system
denouncing “poor working conditions”In addition to the “low and inconsistent” salaries, the union body also lamented the lack of prospects for professional development and the lack of recognition.
For this reason, it considered necessary the intervention of the executive, despite registering the “permanent functional humiliation” by the guardianship.
