PAN/Azores wants the minimum wage to be practiced in the region without IRS taxes

The deputy and leader of the PAN/Açores, Pedro Neves, will deliver to the Legislative Assembly, as a matter of urgency, an initiative aimed at guaranteeing that the minimum wage practiced in the region is not taxed by the IRS.

According to the PAN/Açores deputy, the “lack of response from the Minister of Finance regarding the continuity of the tax regime that exempts Azorean workers who earn the regional minimum wage from paying the IRS is a cause of concern for the party due to the potential aggravation of the sacrifice already imposed on families.”

The existence of the minimum tax for IRS exemption will not be updated and will not follow the national minimum wage in 2024, SIC Notícias reported on Monday, citing government sources. The national minimum wage increases by 5% in the Azores.

According to a press release, this political force points out that, “in the last two years, there has been a tax regime that aims to protect the population of the Azores who earns the regional minimum wage, because he is more exposed to the risk of poverty and in a situation of greater vulnerability.”

This exemption aims to mitigate the impact of the costs of insularity on families in the Azores who are experiencing greatest difficulties. However, there is a serious risk that this regime will end at the beginning of next year, increasing the difficulties of families,” considers deputy Pedro Neves.

Pedro Neves affirms that “the end of this mechanism only contributes to increasing the daily suffocation that these families experience.”

Instead of developing instruments that are true oxygen tanks, we are driving nails into the coffins of these families,” he stressed.

For PAN/Açores, this is a “fair and necessary measure, which guarantees that families in the Azores have the opportunity to live with dignityalleviating the constant worry of fulfilling their daily obligations, contributing to social inclusion and a more just and egalitarian region.”
