The president of the Assembly of the Republic, Aguiar-Branco, considered this Tuesday that the country is more focused on knowing whether the Budget will be approved than on knowing who is lying in relation to what was discussed in private meetings.

“I think the country is focused on the essential issue that is knowing if we are going to have a budget or not, because the Portuguese do not want elections. It needs to have a budget so that all the policies can be applied to solve the problems of the Portuguese: they hope that there is a consensus on the viability of the budget,” he said.

Asked by journalists about who is lying or not in relation to the private meetings held between the prime minister and the leader of Chega, to reach an agreement on the 2025 Budget, Aguiar-Branco stressed that what the people want is for “There is consensus for the Budget”.

“They need to feel that politicians are putting the national interest above private interests and the national interest requires that there be a Budget even for the application, for example, of the PRR funds [Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência]that are fundamental for the economic recovery of the country, to combat the real estate drama and to put the country in growth in a sustainable way,” he stated.

In his opinion, this is the essential issue, although the truth is also essential.

“The truth is what distinguishes politicians from politicians and, therefore, it is essential to tell the truth. I want to emphasize that the Portuguese are concerned about the truth, but they are also concerned about wanting a Budget,” he indicated.

The president of AR also stated that the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, clarified “at the right time and in a very simple and quick way what the truth was.”

“Food, so the controversy on this topic, does not respond to the main interest of the Portuguese, which is to know what Budget they will have and if the parties will make the Budget viable. This is the objective that the Portuguese want: a Budget that allows the implementation of policies that solve the problems of the Portuguese,” he concluded.
