The EU willing to support voluntary return programs for migrants with 25 million euros

The funding is intended to help Member States whose return systems are under pressure by strengthening their capacities and supporting voluntary returns.

The European Commission is available to provide financial assistance of 25 million euros to Member States in the voluntary return processes of people without the right to legally remain in the European Union (EU), it was announced this Wednesday.

According to a press release, the community executive launched this Tuesday the expression of interest for an aid of 25 million euros, within the framework of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (FAMI).

The money is intended for help Member States whose return systems are under pressurestrengthening their capacities and supporting voluntary returns.

Member States participating in the AMIF are eligible and can apply until November 15, 2024.

Voluntary returns are part of the EU Migration and Asylum Pact.

In recent months, several countries have announced tougher measures to deal with migration, and Italy has already sent a first group of migrants to Albania, where they will be processed.

Germany, for its part, suspended free movement agreements, having inserted controls at internal land borders, a measure that Poland also wants to adopt on the border with Belarus, which uses migrants as a hybrid weapon.

The issue is on the agenda of the European Council on Thursday and Friday, where Portugal will be represented by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro.
