The contest to choose the official representation of Portugal at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2023, in Italy, opens in August, according to the annual declaration of the General Directorate of Arts (DGArtes) for this year.
According to the information available on the official website of DGArtes, in 2022, the Project Support Program includes seven competitions, with an endowment of 10.05 million euros, including “the limited competition for the selection of the Official Representation of Portugal at the Architecture exhibition – Venice Biennale 2023, scheduled to open in August”.
The Venice Architecture Biennale will take place between May 20 and November 26 under the motto “The laboratory of the future”. The 18th International Architecture Exhibition, which will have a pre-opening on May 18 and 19, is curated by Lesley Lokko and will also include, as usual, national participation, with each country presenting its own exhibition in the Giardini Pavilions. Arsenale, and in the historic center of Venice.
This edition will again include a selection of parallel events organized by international institutions, which will carry out their own exhibitions and initiatives in Venice.
The Annual Declaration of DGArtes for this year, which includes the bidding schedule and the respective budget allocations, was only approved on Thursday by the Minister of Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva, because it could only be disclosed after the approval of the Budget of the Condition.
However, the six calls for the Sustained Support Program, in the biennial (2023-2024) and four-year (2023-2026) modalities, with a total amount of around 81.3 million euros, were opened on the 13th of May, with applications closing on Tuesday.
Biennial competitions have a total budget of €20.5 million and quadrennial competitions have a total budget of €60.8 million.
Of the remaining six contests in the Project Support Programme, the Creative Europe Complementary Support should open in September and the others in October.
In addition to the Sustained Support and Project Support programs, the 2022 Annual Declaration also provides for the opening, “at the end of the year, of the Support Program for Collaboration in the Arts and Territorial Cohesion, with a global financial allocation of one million of euros”.
