From the plural to the singular: the family drama of the Targaryens in “The house of the dragon”

Three years have passed since the end of “Game Of Thrones” and since then, all you can think about is what comes next. In fact, what comes back. The first of ten episodes of the first season of “House Of The Dragon” (HBO Max) premieres in Portugal on August 22. This is also the first of the spin-offs of the parent series, dedicated, as the name suggests, to the House of Targaryens, and the years on the Iron Throne, that is, in power. The center is at the beginning of the end of the reign, with emphasis on the civil war that takes place within the family for the succession. Power, always power. And a bit of Portugal, since some scenes were shot at Monsanto Castle at the end of last year.

The action takes place in Westeros, three hundred years before “Game Of Thrones”. Some places will be familiar, some plots familiar, faces less so. “House Of The Dragon” comes with a new cast and new characters, some will be recognizable by name as they were already mentioned in the already known story. Paddy Considine is King Virserys I Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy is Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, his eldest daughter, Matt Smith is Prince Daemon Targaryen -the king’s brother, with desires for the throne-, and the cast is completed with Olivia Cooker, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans and Fabian Frankel. At the end of July, The Observer was present at a virtual event via Zoom that brought together Fabien Frankel and Matt Smith. Curious combination, since in the first episode we see them in a particularly competitive and violent challenge.

But none of that is seen in this meeting with the press. Both even agree on how to watch this series. In theory, “House Of The Dragon” starts with a giant fan base, the one who saw “Game Of Thrones” and wants to continue in this universe. However, almost simultaneously, Prime Video will also enter the same fantastic territory this summer, with its series around “The Lord of the Rings”, “The Rings of Power”. In this context, come on, competitive, how does a series like “House Of The Dragon” grow beyond expectations, that is, the fan base that comes from the past and grows towards a new audience? Matt Smith was quick to reply, and Frankel signed off at the top: “Our story is different and localized, it’s a family drama. “Game Of Thrones” was happening all over the place, there were so many different elements. ‘House Of The Dragon’ concentrates everything on the continent of Westeros and in a single family, the Targeryens. There are new actors, the characters are vivid, I think the audience will love it. Obviously the universe is recognizable, but it is also original. And it will have everything, and more, that has made “Game Of Thrones” popular so far: revenge, betrayal, war, love, anger, lust.”
