1960s. The missile crisis in Cuba generates fears: the conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States of America may be about to break out. An American plane was shot down in the land of Fidel Castro. The Swiss embassy, on the US side, realizes that war may be coming soon, deciphering a message that reveals the deployment of nuclear weapons in that territory. The island “is in quarantine”, as John F Kennedy would call it. Life, danger, rumba, cigars, everything boils on the edge of the precipice of being about to end. Annie is in Havana looking for a fashionista woman, the best in the Cuban capital. “Francés!” exclaims the seamstress to Annie, implying that, despite being a foreigner, her name already dances with such enthusiasm through the streets of Havana. “I’m Portuguese!” she replies. “Then why Annie?” asks the Cuban. “It’s a long story…”, replies the protagonist. This long story of Annie, the rebellious daughter of the last PIDE director, Silva País, finally comes to life in another RTP1 commitment to historical fiction. It premieres this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m.
Annie fell in love with the ideology of Che Guevara, married a Swiss diplomat, ran away from her parents’ skirts in 1965 to ally herself with the Cuban revolution, became a translator for Fidel Castro, and had a relationship with her doctor. She wanted to be more “than a pretty face”, throwing away everything the regime expected of her, which at the time was practically nothing. All this while António Oliveira Salazar and his Estado Novo asked Annie’s father to apply authority, moral and physical, to the conspirators of the Portuguese regime. And in the end, that he was one of the main people responsible for “Operation Autumn” (accusations dropped because Silva País died before the trial), which dictated the death of one of Salazar’s great opponents at that time, General Humberto Delgado . In this six-episode series, in addition to learning about the “extraordinary history and personality” of this woman who wanted to emancipate herself and live in freedom, we discover details of a complex family relationship and go through different scenarios -geographical, political and social.
