Scientists restore appearance of 4,000-year-old Stone Age man

More than 100 years ago, while repairing a road on the island of Hitra (Norway), construction workers found the remains of a man of about 25 years old. Archaeologists later determined that they dated to about 4,000 years ago, at the end of the Stone Age.

“We think he drowned. When he died, the sea level was 12.5 meters higher than today and the discovery area was 4 meters deep. Parts of the skeleton are well preserved and must have been covered with shell sand on the seabed shortly after his death,” said Birgit Skar, an archaeologist from NTNU University Museum. ” says.

Along with the bone remains, a dagger and a scabbard were also found. The forend is a rectangular piece of bone with two holes in it that is attached to the wrist of the hand holding the bow. Garda protected the wrist from the blow of the bowstring during the shooting of arrows.

“This equipment may indicate that he is a warrior,” Scar says.

Scar adds that it is not yet possible to say whether the drowning was the result of a fight or an accident.

Staff at the Museum of Natural History and Archeology at the Norwegian University of Technology carefully analyzed the remains and created a reconstruction of the man from Khytra based on skeletal measurements and DNA analysis.
