A congressional committee tasked with proposing new names for army bases named in the Confederates released a list of recommendations Tuesday that, if adopted, would name army bases after women and black Americans.
The commission was commissioned by the military’s first female surgeon, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker; the first Hispanic American, General Richard E. Cavazos, who became a four-star general; and two black American soldiers serving in junior positions and facing discrimination, Lieutenant General Arthur Gregg and Lieutenant Colonel Charity Adams.
Another suggestion is that the base is named after the Sergeant. William Henry Johnson was an African American soldier who became the first U.S. hero in the Great War by fighting fiercely with the enemy, rescuing other soldiers, and the first American soldier to receive the French Croix de guerre for his actions.
The commission also recommended that Fort Bragg be renamed “Fort Liberty” “to commemorate the value of American freedom”. Fort Bragg is named after Confederate General Braxton Bragg.
A total of nine proposals for the name change were published on Tuesday. According to the commission’s website, these include:

Fort Benning, Georgia – Fort Moore is renamed in honor of Lieutenant General Hal and Julia Moore.

Fort Bragg, North Carolina – Fort Liberty has been renamed in honor of the value of freedom.

Fort Gordon, Georgia – Fort Eisenhower has been renamed in honor of Army General Dwight Eisenhower.

Fort Up Hill, Virginia – Fort Walker is named after Dr. Mary Walker.

Fort Hood, Texas – Fort Kavazos has been renamed in honor of General Richard Kavazos.

Fort Lee, Virginia-Fort Gregg-Adams was renamed in honor of Lieutenant General Arthur Gregg and Lieutenant Colonel Charity Adams.

Fort Pickett, Virginia – Renamed Fort Barfoot in Tech’s honor. Sergeant Van T. Barfoot.

Fort Polk, Louisiana – Fort Johnson has been renamed in honor of Sergeant. William Henry Johnson.

Fort Rucker, Alabama – Fort Novosel, Ensign 4th Michael J. Novosel Sr. renamed in his honour.
The commission noted that it can only make recommendations for Department of Defense assets and not others, such as National Guard assets controlled by the federal government and not the states.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement after revealing the names:
I am pleased to see the progress of the Congress-mandated Names Commission on the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021. Today’s announcement highlights the Commission’s efforts to propose nine new names. our soldiers and our women. I thank the members of the commission for their valuable cooperation with base commanders, community leaders, soldiers and military families. And I look forward to their full report later this year.
The commission’s update on Tuesday is just a small part of the name change recommendations it plans to make. Its final report will be submitted to Congress on October 1, 2022.
The list of recommendations will be shared with the Secretary of Defense, who is expected to implement the plan on January 1, 2024 under the 2021 National Defense Appropriations Act.
