Government guarantees that works will advance on the new GNR training center in Portalegre

The works of the new GNR Training Center in Portalegre will advance, in an investment of 25 million euros planned “more than 20 years ago”, the Minister of Internal Administration guaranteed this Wednesday.

“I remember that since 2001, 2002, if we talk about this investment, we are, therefore, making this investment that has already taken more than 20 years of desire and will to materialize,” José Luís Carneiro told journalists after the Ceremony of Honor commitment of 303 new soldiers of the 46th GNR Guards Training Course.

The new facilities of the training center and the territorial deployment are planned to appear on a 28-hectare site, in the industrial zone of the cityassuring the municipality of Portalegre the transfer of the land and the infrastructure and accessibility of the space.

The Minister of Internal Affairs has said that the Government plans in “a year and a half” the creation of the concession and execution project, after which the tender for the work will be launched.

It is already foreseen in the Investment, Infrastructure and Equipment Programming Law, we are talking about an investment of one million euros for the project, a project articulated with the College of Architects that, in the end, will allow the launch of the competition that will go in the order of the 25 million euros, not only for the new infrastructure of the Guarda school, but also for the future territorial deployment”, he explained.

On January 28, 2020, the then Minister of the Interior, Eduardo Cabrita, announced that the tender for the execution project of the new GNR Training Center in Portalegre would be launched “soon”, in an estimated investment of 20 million euros.

The current GNR Training Center in Portalegre is located in the São Bernardo Convent, under a Transfer protocol between the Ministries of Defense and Internal Administration.

Apart from this announcement, the Minister of Internal Administration also stressed to journalists the importance of “another 1,600 guards” joining the GNR this year.

The minister also participated in the signing of a collaboration protocol between the Government and the municipality for the execution of road works in the area where the new GNR Training Center and the Portalegre GNR Territorial Command will be built.

This work is the responsibility of the municipality.which launched the public tender this Tuesday, has an investment of around three million euros, of which 85% comes from community funds and, according to the mayor, should be completed by the end of 2023.
