Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa considered this Sunday that the new leader of the PSD, Luís Montenegro, initiated a “greater rapprochement with the President of the Republic” and opened the way for “a special collaboration”, which he welcomed.
From what I saw, I register a new fact regarding the President of the Portuguese Republic, which is: where in the recent past there was institutional cooperation, there is special collaboration. And therefore there is a shift in the PSD towards a closer relationship with the President of the Portuguese Republic. I register and I am satisfied with that,” the head of state told reporters in São Paulo.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa added that he did not speak like that “because he is from the PSD” and that he would take the same position “with any party”, because he understands that “the country needs collaboration, more than mere institutional cooperation.”
Asked why it led him to speak of a “special collaboration” with Luís Montenegro, who succeeded Rui Rio in the leadership of the PSD, the President of the Republic replied: “Because he used that expression. It wasn’t me, he used the expression.
“In politics, at these very specific points, at also specific moments, the use of words does not matter”, said.
In the closing speech of the PSD Congress, this Sunday, in Porto, Luís Montenegro addressed the “representatives of His Excellency the President of the Republic”, through whom he sent “a PSD new address full availability message continue, with a sense of loyalty and institutional collaboration, the relationship of proximity and cooperation that democracy and the Portuguese demand and deserve”.
According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, it is good that there is “more focused collaboration on what are fundamental points of the country’s strategy” such as the airport solution for the Lisbon region and decentralization, “expedients that involve collaboration between the main parties ”. .
“There’s one thing that I’ve always stood for, and you know, and that’s a strong opposition“, he said, defending that the opposition and the government are mutually reinforcing: “That is very good, the country needs this right now, and it also needs collaboration”.
The Head of State was speaking at the official residence of the Portuguese Consul General in São Paulo, with the Minister of Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva, and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Francisco André, at his side.
