Monkeypox alert: WHO chief Tedros tells at-risk men to reduce number of sexual partners ‘for now’

On Wednesday, World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told gay and bisexual men at risk of monkeypox to reduce the number of sexual partners “for now”.

He warned that about 98 percent of detected cases since the outbreak began are among gays, bisexuals and other men who have sex with men, and they should consider their actions and take measures to protect themselves, the AP reported.

“This means making choices that are safe for ourselves and others for men who have sex with men,” Tedros said. “Today, that includes reducing the number of sexual partners you have.”

The WHO chief urged an earlier message to be cautious, saying that contagious people should be isolated and avoid gatherings that involve close physical contact, people should get the contact information of new sexual partners if they follow suit.

According to Breitbart London, the latest warning reflects a warning issued by British health authorities last month.

To date, more than 19,000 cases have been reported in more than 75 countries; According to a UN subsidiary, deaths have only been reported in Africa.

“We clearly know that one of the main ways to contract this particular disease is through direct contact, close contact, skin-to-skin contact, perhaps even face-to-face contact, contact with droplets or viruses. Dr Rosamund Lewis, Technical Director of WHO Monkeypox, WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland He said at a press briefing.

Most infections observed so far occur in men who have sex with men.

Tedros also urged social media platforms, tech companies and news organizations to stand up to malicious information and warned that this would only fuel the epidemic.

“Stigma and discrimination can be as dangerous as any virus and trigger an epidemic. “As we’ve seen with misinformation about Covid-19, this information is spreading fast on the internet,” he said.

Andy Seal, WHO’s advisor on HIV, hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections, said experts have determined that the current monkeypox epidemic is “clearly sexually transmitted,” but have not yet determined whether it is a sexually transmitted infection.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released its own special guide for those contemplating sexual activity during monkeypox. The advice is published under the headings of Social Encounters, Safe Sex, and Monkey Disease.

Dr Hugh Adler, who treats patients with monkeypox in the UK, says monkeypox is sexually transmitted and having sex and anonymous sex with unknown partners has helped spread it.

“Monkeypox has probably always been transmitted and displayed this way, but it hasn’t been officially reported before and it wasn’t that common,” he said.
