The PS of Madeira said this Friday that it was concerned about the 7.3% unemployment rate registered in the region in the second quarter, arguing that the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP) must adopt policies that improve employment indicators and create more opportunities. .

In a political initiative at the Employment Institute of Madeira, the socialist argued that it is necessary adopt new policies in relation to professional and curricular practicesas well as supporting companies so that they can “absorb young people who leave universities and technical-professional training and who need their first job opportunity.”
Retaining this talent in the region, companies will be able to develop, they will be able to grow, we will increase the critical mass, we will reverse the population drop that we have seen in recent years and all this will create a virtuous circle of growth and new opportunities for the young people of the Region” , stressed the deputy of the largest opposition party in the parliament of Madeira.
Sérgio Gonçalves said that in Madeira there are 9,000 young people, between 16 and 34 years old, who neither study nor work, adding that “27% of the unemployed correspond” to this age group and “around 17,000 people left their land in the last decade due to lack of opportunities”.
The unemployment rate in Madeira stood at 7.3% in the second quarter of this year, 0.2 percentage points (pp) less than the previous one and 1.1 pp less than the same period last year, revealed the Madeira Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM), on Wednesday.
According to the DREM, “the estimate of the unemployed population, calculated at 9,600 people, decreased by 10.1% compared to the same quarter of the previous year (1,100 people) and 2.1% compared to the previous quarter (about 200 people)” .
On the other hand, the the employed population stood at 122,500 peopleincreasing by 5.0% year-on-year and 1.2% compared to the previous quarter.
The DREM adds that, of the employed population, 4,800 people worked from home, the highest figure in the history of the autonomous community, according to the results of the Employment Survey.
According to data released this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the unemployment rate in Portugal in the second quarter fell from 5.9% in the first quarter to 5.7%. In relation to the same quarter of the previous year, the reduction was one percentage point.
From April to June, the unemployment rate was higher than the national average in three regions of the country (Madeira: 7.3%; Lisbon Metropolitan Area: 6.8% and Azores: 5.9%) and lower in the four remaining regions (North: 5.5%). %; Algarve: 5.3%; Center: 5.2%; and Alentejo: 4.4%).
