The Chamber of Funchal criticizes the “inability” of the State to provide means to the PSP in Madeira

The mayor of Funchal said this Sunday that one of the main concerns is the problem of security in the municipality, criticizing the “inability” of the State to provide the police forces of the region with the necessary means.

“The issue of security in Funchal is a problem that worries us a lot and requires firmness and intervention from all of us, but above all work and cooperation between all entities, public and private, as well as people, in particular families and the community. community. young people”, said Pedro Calado, speaking at the solemn session of the Day of the City of Funchal, which celebrates 514 years.

The mayor maintained that “the State has been notoriously incapable of providing the PSP of Madeira with the necessary human resources for a long time, to effectively combat the scourge that today is drugs and alcohol.”

“In the last eight years nothing has been done about it and, today, we have a big problem to solve,” he stressed, recalling that “hard work will begin with the Government of the Republic and the Internal Administration so that the PSP, in Funchal, have adequate human resources”.

The head of the head municipality of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) took stock of the 11 months of management of the ‘Funchal Semper à Frente’ (PSD/CDS) project, pointing out that he found “a very difficult situation with accounts, mortgaged assets and hidden debts”, in a management that has already been described as “frivolous and irresponsible” by the previous council of the Confiança coalition led by the PS.

This situation “called into question the financial transfers from the State to the Municipality of Funchal”, he added.

Pedro Calado stressed that “on this Day of the City of Funchal” he could not remain “indifferent to the very serious situation that the country is going through”, opining that “saying that it is a disaster is not enough for the chaos installed in various basic sectors of society “. Portuguese and that increasingly relegates Portugal to the bottom of Europe”.

The mayor has mentioned “the greatest crisis in the history of the Regional Health System”, the “total disorientation” of the TAP management that affects tourism and the national economy, the “scourge of the fires, because, year after year, Portugal is still burning.

“The political opportunism and social insensitivity of this government with a socialist majority leads to shocking paradoxes,” he underlined, arguing that this is a political stance that will make Madeirans reject PS governability in this region.

In the opinion of Pedro Calado, “the time has come to demand a new course for Portugal”, noting that he is convinced that “in the near future, this Region will provide the motivating impetus for a change in the national whole.

The mayor stressed that in the 11 months of government, “the largest Municipal Budget of the last 20 years was presented and approved, amounting to 110 million euros, which was later corrected to 122 million euros”, which has “a strong bias Social”.” and managed to reduce the tax burden by 5.5 million euros with the elimination of the surcharge and the refund of 2.5% of the IRS.
