The 77th session of the UN General Assembly has as its motto “Solutions through solidarity, sustainability and science”. The theme of the general debate is “A defining moment: Transformative solutions for interconnected challenges”.
In these annual meetings, both the Prime Minister and the President of the Republic have reiterated their defense of multilateralism and the priorities defined by the Secretary General of the UN, their support for the universal abolition of the death penalty and a reform of the Council of Security that includes in this body an African country, Brazil and India as permanent members.
António Costa was elected UN Secretary General in 2016, proposed by Portugal, and began his term on January 1, 2017.
The former Portuguese prime minister was re-elected in 2021 and ends his second five-year term as head of the UN at the end of 2026.
