IL between progressives and pressure from conservatives

The Liberal-Conservatives are trying to gain space within the Liberal Initiative, at a time when the party is facing a rise in internal challenge and the division between those who demand new responses and those who prefer to give way to the current leadership. Among the most progressive liberals, there are those who normalize the situation, but there are also those who do not feel comfortable – this is the case of a former leader who announced that he was going to leave the party because he did not see himself in the leadership’s lack of attitude.

Nuno Simões de Melo, one of the faces that appears as opposition to the team led by João Cotrim Figueiredo and that will present a list to the National Council, admits that he would like to see “liberal conservatism as the dominant trend in the IL” and that this “current be considered” within the party.

“We believe that conservatism is the historical validation of things that are going well and, as such, we can be considered the liberal right within the IL.” The former soldier who joined the liberal party last year and is a municipal deputy in Mafra has no doubts that the possibility of a more conservative current “does not weaken the IL” and “creates wealth”.
