Jack Nicklaus slams ‘cancellation culture’ on Trump’s losing course in PGA championship

Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus has criticized the “cancellation culture” he says has led to the PGA removing the championship from the Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster.

This week, a professional golfer who won a record 18 major championships said the tournament should not be moved to the South Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Nicklaus said he loved PGA leader Seth Waugh, but added that Waugh foolishly succumbed to the decision-making cancel culture.

“Seth doesn’t need this job. Nicklaus got the job because he thought he could give a good guide to America’s PGA,” Nicklaus told Fire Pit Collective. “And I think he does. But this step canceled the culture. Donald Trump may be anyone, but he loves golf and this country. He is a student of the game and a great figure in the game. What he does in golf in the future depends on what the cancellation culture allows him to do.”

Waugh said in January that “the political situation is not our fault”, forcing the contest to back out of Trump’s course. He described the situation as an “existential” threat and said he “had no choice”.

“We are stewards of our members, the game, our mission, and our brand,” he explained at the time. “And how exactly can we protect it? The tragic events of Wednesday gave us the feeling that we could no longer handle Bedminster. The damage may be irreversible. The only real step is to leave. ”

But the Trump organization said the PGA “has no right to terminate” the deal.

By December of that year, the PGA had reached an undisclosed legal settlement over the confusion.

The PGA of America (“PGA”) and The Trump Organization announced today that they have reached an agreement in an ongoing dispute over the PGA’s decision to terminate its contract with the Trump National Golf Club of Bedminster, New Jersey, to host the 2022 PGA Championship. “, PGA said in a press release.

The PGA also praised Trump’s organization:

“The Trump Organization’s contribution to the golf community is appreciated. Thank you to the company for having hundreds of dedicated PGA professionals and continuing to support the golf community through charity events and sponsorship of youth golf programs. As stated when announced in 2014, Trump Bedminster is a major championship-worthy golf course and is in the portfolio of some of the best private and public golf courses in the world. ”

The statement concluded with a few words from Eric Trump, vice president of the Trump Organization:

“We have great respect for the work of the PGA. Over the past 20 years we have enjoyed working with the PGA to provide our members and the public with some of the best golf experiences anywhere in the world. We look forward to continuing to support the mission of the PGA and its professionals who are the best in the golf industry. . ”

Trump added that the deal was a “good outcome for everyone.” Thank you PGA of America! ”
