NEW YORK (AP) — A man running the Brooklyn Half Marathon fell and died Saturday morning, a New York City Fire Department spokesperson said.
Press Secretary Frank Dwyer said the runner was taken to a nearby hospital and succumbed to his injuries. Other details, including the reason for the runner’s fall, were not available Saturday afternoon.
Six more runners were hospitalized, Dwyer said. Three of them were seriously injured in a non-life-threatening manner, and three of them were slightly injured.
More than 22,000 runners are expected to run from Prospect Park to the Coney Island Boardwalk at the half marathon on Saturday, returning to full capacity for the first time in three years.
At noon in Brooklyn, the temperature exceeded 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.7 degrees Celsius). Warning that high temperatures and high humidity can cause heat sickness, the Heat Warning remains in effect throughout New York until 8:00 PM Saturday evening.
