Manager Gareth Southgate has warned Manchester United stars such as Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho that they have “a lot of work to do” if they want to regain their places in England’s World Cup squad.

Asked about United’s chances of making it to the World Cup squad, Southgate said: “We only have Maguire with us! They have a lot to do to get back into the squad.”

As to whether United’s easy work of not qualifying for the Champions League could improve their chances, Southgate added: “I think the lighter the workload, the less chance of injury and hopefully players will more serious. But there is no way to know.”

He continued: “Some players are at their best and want to play every game because they feel they are at their best. Others need breaks and need a longer recovery period between matches to be at their best.”
