Ricardo Esgaio deactivated Instagram (and all other networks) after a barrage of criticism after the draw with Sp. Braga

In the 83rd minute, less than 10 minutes from the final whistle, Sporting scored for the third time and regained the lead against Sp. Braga. Rúben Amorim, who moments before had removed Pedro Porro so as not to play from zero to any side, He wanted to close the right aisle and removed Trincao to put Ricardo Esgaio. Before 90′, however, Sp. Braga equalized through Abel Ruiz, in a play that started precisely on the right of the Leon defense, with an acceleration by Álvaro Djaló that left Esgaio behind.

However, after the tie in Pedreira and the consequent loss of two points on the opening day of the Primeira Liga, the Sporting fans found Ricardo Esgaio a scapegoat. The 29-year-old winger was heavily criticized on social media in the hours after Sunday’s game ended. He even deactivated his personal Instagram account and all the others he had on other platforms.

However, it is not the first time that Esgaio has received criticism from Sporting fans through social networks. In January, when the lions lost to Santa Clara in the Azores, the right-back was also the main target of Leon discontent and even ended up disabling the ability to comment on the posts he had on Instagram, removing many of the insulting comments.

The repetition of the episode led Manuel Ugarte, a Uruguayan Sporting midfielder, to publicly defend his partner. “How easy to criticize without showing your face. How easy to hide behind an anonymous account. At least have the courage and use your own account.” Ugarte wrote in a comment to a post on the LPDD page, which had posted several posts on Twitter about Ricardo Esgaio’s exhibition. Pedro Porro, curiously the other right back of the lions, also showed his support for the player, writing “I like you, Ricardo. We are with you!!”, in a publication that has since been deleted.

Tiago Tomás, a striker who is at Stuttgart on loan from Sporting, commented in the publication of the newspaper Récord on the subject. “2022 and they still think this is the way”, he shot the 20-year-old player.
