From an illustrious stranger it became rumour, from rumor it quickly became certainty, and from certainty even more quickly it became confirmation. The story of the signing of Sotiris Alexandropoulos by Sporting It did not have great characteristics of a soap opera and it became official this Monday, with the lions announcing the arrival of the new reinforcement.
Alexandropoulos, a 20-year-old Greek midfielder, arrives from Panathinaikos in exchange for four million fixed euros plus 500 thousand after 20 games and another 500 thousand after another 20 games, with the club maintaining a 30% surplus in relation to a future sale. The player, international for Greece, arrived at the Humberto Delgado airport at dawn on Sunday and did not make a statement to the journalists, although his mere presence in Lisbon confirmed that he would sign for Sporting.

Alexandropoulos, originally from Athens, carried out the entire formation of Panathinaikos, debuting in the club’s first team in 2019 at just 18 years old, having won the Greek Cup in 2021/22. He now signed for the lions until 2027, being one of the planned reinforcements for a Rúben Amorim midfield that lost Matheus Nunes and João Palhinha in the Premier League and that he was still without Daniel Bragança thanks to a long-term injury. Apart from the young Greek midfielder, Sporting are still on the market for another midfielder, possibly having abandoned their intention to sign a striker with the renewal of Jovane Cabral.
Thus, Alexandropoulos becomes Sporting’s sixth reinforcement in this summer market after Franco Israel, Jeremiah St. Juste, Rochinha, Morita and Francisco Trincao. The official arrival of the Greek international takes place in the middle of the leonine crisis, after two consecutive defeats in the Championship against FC Porto and Desp. Chaves and in the run-up to the start of the Champions League group stage, where the lions are scheduled to make their debut in Germany against Eintracht Frankfurt next Wednesday.
