Andy Reed blames Chiefs’ week-1 injuries on Cardinals ‘Re-Sodded’ playing surface

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered two serious injuries against the Arizona Cardinals in their first win of the season. Chiefs coach Andy Reid believes he knows exactly what caused these injuries: the playing surface at Cardinals State Farm.

In Sunday’s game, batsman Harrison Butker and corner player Trent McDuffie were injured. Butker is listed daily with an ankle sprain. McDuffie was in reserve with a hamstring injury that would have kept him out for at least four weeks.

When asked about the injuries, Reed wasted no time in taking the blame.

“They’ve done that again, which is great because that’s where they practice,” Reid said. “But it’s a little loose. That’s what happens sometimes, when you re-shed the grass it loosens.

“It’s part of Butker’s and McDuffie’s injury. … Turf is coming in, and I’ll tell you it has something to do with it. Or I said the same thing. So that’s definitely not an excuse, but I mean, you all see it. Look at the logs.”

The Cardinals note that their field is consistently ranked among the best in the NFL.

“The whole pitch was changed on Monday, August 22 – the day after the last home play against Baltimore – almost three full weeks into Week 1 against Kansas City,” Cardinals spokesman Mark Dalton said via Pro. Football talk. “This is more than enough for the Tifway Bermuda 419 hybrid grass to take root, especially in 109-degree temperatures and ample sunlight.

“The field on State Farm is routinely ranked among the best—if not the BEST—among NFLPA polls among NFL players,” Dalton said. Said. “Like all pitches, State Farm Stadium’s surface is subject to NFL-mandated testing and certification before and after games. On Sunday, he not only met those standards, he exceeded them.”

Only Tifway Bermuda 419 experts know if that makes sense.

We know that Reed and the Chiefs had little time to deal with injuries sustained on Sunday as they faced off in their first opening game of the season against the Chargers on Thursday night.
