Former Australian surfer Chris Davidson dies after bar fight

Chris Davidson died in hospital on Saturday night after falling to the ground and hitting his head during an argument outside a bar in north Sydney, international media reports.

The incident took place in South West Rocks, a small coastal town. According to The Guardian, police rushed to the scene shortly after 11 p.m. and found the 45-year-old former surfer unconscious. Davidson fell to the ground after being punched in the face. He was treated at the scene and then transported to Kempsey Hospital, where he died a short time later.

A 42-year-old man was arrested Sunday at his South West Rocks home and charged with murder. The suspect will be tried in November, according to the BBC.

Chris Davidson grew up in North Narrabeen, north of Sydney, and competed in the world surfing championships in 2010 and 2011. In 2010, he placed third in the event, held in Portugal, along with Kelly Slater.

The World Surf League (WSL) reacted to the death of the former surfer, being “sad” by what happened. Surfing Australia said the surfing community is mourning the disappearance of the “incredibly talented” Davidson.
