According to police sources, 127 people, including two police officers, were killed and about 180 injured in riots after a football match on the Indonesian island of Java, when fans stormed the stadium due to the loss of their team.
Police, who used tear gas to disperse the clashes, said the riots occurred after the end of the match, which Arima lost to Presbia Surabaya 2-3.
East Java police chief Niko Aventa said 24 people died at the stadium, while the rest died in hospital.
The riots also injured at least 180 people who were taken to various hospitals in the area.
Aventa explained that most of the deaths were caused by a stampede of fans trying to escape the riot, which resulted in many suffocating to death.
Following this disastrous incident, the Indonesian Football Association decided to suspend all matches for a week, and the Indonesian Football Association announced the opening of an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
