What is sustainability? we ask the children

This article is written by EDP

They are the future of the planet and they know it very well. They know how to talk about sustainability, what adults should do to be environmentally friendly, and they can even predict the future. What will the world be like when the children of today become the adults of tomorrow? Planet Zero asked the children.

They are the first generation born entirely in the 21st century and the first to be 100% digital. It is not surprising, therefore, that those born between 2010 and 2019 have been baptized as the “alpha generation”. In addition to being digital natives, they were born used to hearing about climate change and, as such, sustainability. For children under the age of 10, it is clear that everyone must do their part for the future of the planet. But what future is this?

Those most affected by the climate emergency

“Children and young people are the most affected by the global environmental crisis we are experiencing today. They are also the most threatened by the path we are choosing,” says David Boyd, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment.

Davis Boyd refers to the increase in the average temperature of the planet, the loss of biodiversity and the increase in pollution: three threats that must be reversed and with which children are committed.

Sustainability on the tip of the tongue

They know by heart what the three Rs mean, the fundamental difference between a car and a bicycle (no, it’s not the fact that you have to pedal) and they have a slogan on the tip of their tongue: “there is no planet B” .

Anything that happens to the environment will affect these children in their future, at the same time that they could be the key to solving problems that today seem impossible to solve. Are you excited and hopeful about what the next few decades hold? How do they imagine the world when they are adults?
