Eric Greitens, a former governor of Missouri running to replace Roy Blunt to represent the state in the U.S. Senate, was censored on Twitter and Facebook for using the metaphor “hunt for RINOS” (Republicans) as a noun.
In the ad, Greitens, a former Navy SEAL, raids the house in search of “Rhino,” and Greitens narrates it in a nature documentary style.
“We’re looking for RINO now,” Greitens said in the ad. “RINO eats corruption and bears traces of cowardice.”
“Join the MAGA team, get a RINO hunting license. “We don’t have a bag limit, we don’t have a tag limit, and it won’t expire until we save our country,” he said.
Despite the seemingly metaphorical and sarcastic nature of the ad, Facebook blacklisted it in accordance with its “policy of violence and incitement.”
Twitter also targeted Greitens by disabling tweet sharing and interaction, meaning that no one could retweet or reply to the tweet. the tweet itself you can just follow the linkor by going directly to the Greitens tape with the following warning:
This tweet violates Twitter’s abusive behavior policy. However, Twitter has decided that it may be in the public interest to keep the tweet accessible.
“If someone doesn’t understand this metaphor, they’re either lying or stupid,” said Dylan Johnson, Greitens campaign manager.
While social media platforms suppress playful metaphors of Republican Senate candidates, they are reluctant to apply their policies to left-wing users who openly threaten or support violence.
For example, when violent theft and unrest spread in the United States after the death of George Floyd, Twitter took no action, even though people used the platform to broadcast their looting targets.
