Australian authorities on Monday ordered more than 30,000 people in Sydney to leave their homes, following flooding caused by heavy rain since the weekend.
The evacuation order affects several parts of western Sydney, where the levels of the Hawkesbury, Nepean and Colo rivers continue to rise.
The devastating floods have left some communities isolated.
“For many communities, this is another flood in less than 18 months. Some of the footage is truly heartbreaking: people’s homes, their lives are turned upside down again and their livelihoods are severely affected,” the NSW Regional Government’s Minister for Flood Recovery told reporters. Following heavy rain, which is expected to continue throughout the week along the New South Wales coast, Australian authorities deployed around 100 soldiers to help in efforts to contain and evacuate rivers.
In March, several areas of New South Wales, including western Sydney and Lismore, some 600 kilometers north of the city, were hit by devastating floods that caused 20 deaths and extensive property damage.
