Poor Bezos: EU forces Amazon to ease Prime subscription cancellation

E-commerce giant Amazon has reportedly agreed to facilitate the process of canceling its core membership in Europe due to pressure from the European Union. The EU accused Amazon of displaying “several pages” of “disruptive information” and “vague button names” when users tried to cancel their Prime subscription.

The Verge reports that Amazon has agreed to simplify the Prime cancellation process in Europe, allowing customers in the region to complete their membership in just two clicks rather than going through a series of mandatory cancellation screens. The news was announced by the European Commission, saying the changes were made on July 1 and that Amazon should prevent it from displaying “certain pages” containing “disruptive information” and “vague button tags” when tested on users who unsubscribe to Prime.

The European Commission said the new rules apply to both the European Union and the European Economic Area, and even though the UK leaves the EU in 2020, UK subscribers will enjoy the same benefits. When asked if the same changes would be made in the US, an Amazon spokesperson declined to respond, telling Vege that “there are no changes to be announced at this time”.

An Amazon spokesperson said:

Transparency and customer trust are top priorities for us. By design, we have made it so that customers can both register and cancel their Prime membership.

We are constantly listening to feedback and looking for ways to improve our customer experience, and we are not announcing changes at this time.

Amazon has agreed to make changes to the cancellation process following a complaint from EU consumer groups that prepared a report on the Amazon Prince cancellation process in 2021. The report includes screenshots of some of the pages that it claims contain “manipulative design techniques” that users must click to unsubscribe. Also known as “dark patterns”.
