Well-informed sources in the Russian industry announced that the country’s specialists will test another nuclear icebreaker developed within the framework of the “22220” project.
Leonid Irlitsa, Managing Director of the Russian company “Atomflot”, said: “It was decided that the sea trials of the factory’s new Ural nuclear icebreaker will be carried out next September, and after the completion of said trials, the ship must will be delivered to the customer in November of this year.”
“The work continues to build and equip the ship, and the reactor here is proven and operational, everything is in order, and preparations for the sea trials of the ship are underway.”
And “Ural” is the third nuclear icebreaker developed by Russia within the framework of the “22220” project, its development began in 2016, and it first entered the water in May 2019.
Within the framework of the aforementioned project, Russia is building ships that will serve as icebreakers that can escort ships and naval convoys from the Arctic regions, carry out rescue missions and lead the ships in water with ice thickness up to 2.8 m.
Equipped with independent nuclear power plants with a capacity of 60 megawatts, these ships have a lifespan of 320,000 hours, a length of 173.3 m, a width of 34 meters, a height of 15.2 m and a displacement of 33,500 tons . .
