The Portuguese Society of Authors (SPA) expressed its “solidarity” to Pedro Abrunhosa, after the criticism directed at the artist by the Russian embassy.
“SPA has always considered the stage as a space of freedom for authors and performers, so must not be subject to any form of political or diplomatic coercion, whatever the circumstances“, says a note published on the website and published on July 25.
It also refers that the statements made in Águeda, on July 2, in which Abrunhosa criticized the war and the Vladimir Putin regime, were made in “full freedom.”
“The Portuguese authors’ cooperative expresses its solidarity and support for Pedro Abrunhosa, president of its General Assembly board, and condemns the position adopted by the Embassy of the Russian Federation in relation to its action in Águeda, carried out with total freedom and in coherence with the principles and values that it has always defended.”
“Putin, go to hell.” Pedro Abrunhosa sings against Russia in Águeda, but the embassy did not like it
SPA also recalls that, at the time of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it was quick to condemn the war, supporting “materially actions of solidarity with the victimized people”. He adds that “just a few days ago, in direct coordination with the Municipality of Reguengos, he received two Ukrainian refugees at Casa Gião, located there, whom he will continue to support, that is, at work. ”
Freedom of expression is a fundamental right defended by the SPA since the time of April 25, he also recalls, referring to the censorship that was exercised over political singers and writers at that time. “Already before April 25, the SPA was a space of freedom, in particular for political singers and writers who used to suffer the constant and relentless pressure of censorship. This will continue to be its rule and practice, always in the name of freedom and democracy, without fear or doubt that will make it go back.
Artists launch movement in support of Pedro Abrunhosa: “Intimidation will not silence us”
On the stage of the AgitÁgueda festival, on July 2, Pedro Abrunhosa adapted the song “Maybe F***” –which he already used, and altered, to make political criticism– to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The episode prompted a statement posted on Facebook by the Russian embassy, which directly addresses the musician. Following the controversy, several artists came together to support the artist, posting a photo of Abrunhosa on social media, accompanied by a statement.
