Macao lowers tropical cyclone alert, which moves away from the territory

Macao lowered the alert signal for tropical cyclone Mulan at 1:00 p.m. (06:00 Lisbon time), as it moves away from the territory.

The Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Office reported that the climate “remains unstable due to the influence of circulating tropical cyclones (…) and related rain bands” and that strong winds, occasional showers and thunderstorms are still expected.

According to Civil Protection, until 12:00 noon (05:00 in Lisbon) there had been no incidents, both on the Macao peninsula and on the islands of Taipa and Coloane.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, eight scheduled flights to Macau International Airport were delayed, were canceled or changed.

The authorities reported that the public transport service has been resumed and that circulation has been reopened on the three sea bridges.

Only four people sought refuge in the Emergency Reception Centers.

Macao had declared this Wednesday a state of immediate prevention and raised the alert level to 8 for Mulán, now downloading the notice to level 3.

The tropical storm warning scale is made up of signals 1, 3, 8, 9 and 10, whose emission depends on the proximity of the storm and the intensity of the winds.

Since 2017, three typhoons have forced authorities to issue high alert, with the latest (Figs) hitting Macau in August 2020.

In September 2018, Mangkhut caused 40 injuries and severe flooding in the territory.

A year earlier, Typhoon Hato (later called Yamaneko by local authorities), considered the worst to hit the territory in more than 50 years, caused 10 deaths and 240 injuries.
