UNC Study: 68% of Conservative Students Censored Themselves on University of North Carolina Campuses

Conservative students are more likely than their liberal counterparts to censor their political views on University of North Carolina (UNC) campuses. A student survey by professors found that 68 percent of conservative students were concerned about sharing their political views, compared to only 31 percent of students on the left.

Four professors from the University of North Carolina wrote a study titled “Free Speech and Constructive Dialogue in the University System of North Carolina” “to better understand their experience with freedom of speech and constructive dialogue.”

The new freedom of speech study builds on a 2019 study by professors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that concluded that “students who identify as conservative face clear challenges” and that “campuses do not always create an environment conducive to free expression.” ” “, Among other things. thing.

“Those who self-identified as conservative were more likely to express freedom of expression concerns than those who described themselves as liberal,” the authors added in their abstract, adding that liberal students had a “stronger communication preference” than their conservative peers.

“We also found that students who describe themselves as liberals are more likely to engage and engage with their ingroup than students who describe themselves as conservative,” the professors said.

UNC-Chapel Hill professors Timothy J. Ryan, Jennifer Larson and Mark McNeilly, and UNC-Greensboro professor Andrew M. Engelhardt interviewed students from eight UNC campuses.

When asked if they care about the opinions of other students, 68% of conservatives said yes, and 31% of leftists said yes. When asked whether professors care about their views, 42% of conservatives said yes, while only 12% of leftists said yes.

The study also revealed that 32 percent of conservative students are worried about their grades, while 7 percent of left-leaning students who are worried about their grades are worried about their grades.

Professors also noted that “many students are afraid to express their deep-seated political views in the classroom and use self-censorship because they fear possible backlash.”

They added that “they found racial issues to be the most disturbing issue for students,” but noted that “they saw no evidence that the views suppressed by the students were inconsistent with the university’s anti-harassment or anti-discrimination policy.”
