Pollen concentrations are low until Sunday due to rain, but increase during the week

The concentration of pollen in the atmosphere will be at low risk until Sunday due to the rains, reaching higher levels during the next week with the increase in temperature and the absence of showers, the Pollen Bulletin reports this Thursday.

According to the Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SPAIC), starting on Friday, atmospheric pollen concentrations are expected to range from low risk (on rainy days) to high risk throughout the country, with the exception of the Algarve and the Azores Archipelago, where pollen concentrations will be moderate, and also the Madeira Archipelago, where they will remain low.

Until Saturday or Sunday, depending on the region of the country, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere forecasts rainfall, sometimes intense, with greater incidence in the northern regions of Portugal, and “a decrease in the pollen load in the air is expected, due to the effect of the so-called ‘atmospheric washing’”.

However, pollen concentrations will increase again throughout the week, with the improvement of weather conditions, and SPAIC recommends that the population pay attention to the weather forecast to complement the pollen forecast.

In general, the atmosphere is dominated by pollination from grasses and urticaceae herbs (including pellitory), reaching high-risk levels for patients allergic to these pollens in some regions of the country.

Pollination is also observed in chestnut and in the herbs plantain, sorrel, chenopodia and heather, according to SPAIC.

This will be the last Pollen Bulletin for this season. However, the Portuguese Aerobiology Network will continue to display pollen forecasts throughout the year on the RPA website, updated every Friday.
