Train accident in Russia leaves three dead and dozens injured

The derailment of a passenger train in northern Russia caused three deaths and dozens of injuries, Russian authorities announced this Thursday.

The 14-carriage train derailed on Wednesday evening in the Komi Republic, the state-owned Russian Railways said in a statement, as cited by the AP news agency.

Nine of the cars went off the tracks and about four dozen people were injured, ten of whom had to be hospitalized, state news agencies reported.

The body of the third victim, a 16-year-old girl, was found this Thursday afternoon (local time), according to the Investigative Committee, the main Russian agency that investigates possible criminal cases.

The train was carrying 232 passengers.

Russian Railways’ information does not make clear whether there was negligence on the part of the train crew.

The convoy was heading to the southern city of Novorossiysk from Vorkuta, a coal mining town in northern Komi.

The railway company has agreed to pay two million rubles (about 20,000 euros) to each of the victims’ families, plus a slightly larger amount that they will receive from insurance.

Each of the hospitalized wounded will receive one million rubles (about 10,000 euros).
