Biden announces billion-dollar investments in climate change resilience

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced a $1 billion investment plan, divided into 656 projects, aimed at increasing the resilience of communities to climate change and its effects.

“The assistance will help state, tribal, local and territorial governments address disaster risks, including extreme heat, wildfires, droughts, hurricanes, earthquakes and increased flooding,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) explained.

For DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, these grants are “a lifeline for communities across the country“The projects range from large flood mitigation projects to shaded bus stops” and their impact, he added, “will ultimately be measured in lives saved and catastrophes avoided.”

The DHS also detailed that among the most funded projects are those related to flood control and the protection of infrastructure and public services.

Examples cited include a flood barrier in the Eastwick neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 20 shaded bus stops in Washington, the rehabilitation of the Magalia Dam in California, and the replacement of the sewer system in Decatur, Georgia.
