The Maritime Authority reports six deaths during the bathing season and the majority in the Algarve

Six people died on Portuguese beaches during this year’s bathing season, which ran between May 1 and October 31, most in the Algarve region, according to a report released this Monday by the National Maritime Authority (AMN). ).

In an assessment of the six months of the 2024 bathing season, which ended on October 31, the AMN reports that it recorded three fatal accidents on supervised maritime beaches, two on unsupervised beaches and one in other unsupervised areas.

Four of the six recorded deaths were caused by “sudden illness,” one by drowning and one by “unknown causes.”

Most of the deaths occurred in the Algarve region, specifically in Meia Praia (Lagos), Praia Maria Luísa (Albufeira) and Manta Rota (Vila Real de Santo António).

Deaths were also recorded in Praia do Torrão do Lameiro (Ovar) and Baía de São Martinho do Porto Sul (Alcobaça).

During the bathing season, AMN carried out 1,175 rescues and 3,664 actions first aidhaving mobilized a device composed of 548 elements.

In 2023, during the bathing season, 14 deaths occurred, seven of which were due to sudden illness and the rest due to drowning.
