Two earthquakes, one measuring 5.1 and the other measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale, recorded in Cuba

Two earthquakes, with magnitudes of 5.1 and 6.7 on the Richter scale, were felt this Sunday in eastern Cuba, without any material or human damage being recorded so far, according to the National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais). .

After a first earthquake recorded around 10:30 a.m. in Cuba (3:30 p.m. GMT), the country shook again at 11:49 a.m. local time (4:49 p.m. GMT), with the epicenter 32 kilometers southeast of the municipality of Pilón, in the province of Granma, and at a depth of 10 kilometers.

According to the National Center for Seismological Research, in addition to Granma, the earthquake was also felt in the eastern provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba and Holguín, as well as in the central-eastern regions of Camagüey and Ciego de Ávila.

The two earthquakes this Sunday occur almost a month after the 5.1 magnitude earthquake recorded on October 17 and felt with greater intensity in Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo and Granma (east), without any material damage being recorded, recalls the Spanish news agency EFE.

EFE also recalls that, in addition to the earthquake, the eastern provinces have been hit in recent days by intense rains, in particular Guantánamo, which was seriously affected three weeks ago by the impact of tropical storm Óscar, with eight deaths and damage. considerable. in homes and agriculture.

Cuba is located in a region that extends from the Dominican Republic to Mexico, where different tectonic fault systems with significant seismic activity converge.

The largest documented earthquake in Cuba occurred almost a century ago: on February 3, 1932, at 01:15 a.m., the earthquake of magnitude 6.7 on the Richter scale caused 13 deaths and around two thousand injuries.
