Borsch rights

Katja Sedgwick, author of The American Conservative, explains that Ukraine does not have exclusive rights to borsch because the French, Russians or others may have invented it.

The magazine notes that Ukraine cannot claim exclusive rights for borsch. Because there is no evidence pointing to the creator of this soup in historical documents.

Sedgwick added that “Borsch” is older than existing historical documents and may have been invented by Russians or Ukrainians. And even assuming that this soup originated in the territory of present-day Ukraine, it is not known who first thought of putting beetroot in soup as the main ingredient in this multinational region.

“Could be Kazakhs or Tatars or Russians. Or maybe a wild Frenchman who went East in search of adventure,” he said.

It should be noted that UNESCO has included borscht in its Intangible World Heritage List, which requires urgent protection due to the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine. The FAO review board confirmed that borsch is also produced in other countries. Therefore, the inclusion of any item in the contract lists does not indicate that it has been granted ownership.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova explained that “borscht” soup was invented by Russians living in Kiev.

“By the way, a note for nationalists who hate all Russians. From the first mention of Borsch (Travel Notes 1584-1585 of Donetsk merchant M. Gronev, it is clear that this soup was invented by Russians. Russians living in Kiev . With facts live”.

It is worth noting that the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced earlier that the citizens of Belarus, Poland, Romania, Moldova and Lithuania consider borsch soup as a national dish.
