Payola Podcast: Guests pay up to $50,000 to watch popular shows

A recent Bloomberg report shows that some podcast guests pay up to $50,000 to appear on popular podcasts.

Bloomberg reports that a new era of pay-per-game podcasting has arrived, where guests pay huge sums to join popular podcasts. Bloomberg interviews dozens of podcast industry sources and found that health, cryptocurrency and business podcasts are the most popular.

Most of these big paid podcasts don’t mention that a guest pays to perform. Craig Delsack, a New York-based media attorney, said, “As someone who monetizes this type of promotional content, she needs to be exposed. It’s just a good practice that builds podcaster trust. This cannot be the Wild West.”

An FTC spokesperson said it could not comment on the details, stating, “However, this is our general guideline: deception occurs when consumers who act reasonably in the circumstances are mistaken about nature, regardless of the medium in which an ad or promotional message is distributed” or source and such misleading. impression may influence their decisions or behavior regarding the advertised product or advertisement.”

However, this app seems to be getting more and more popular among podcasters. Online platform Guestio has recently raised over $1 million to create a marketplace dedicated to paid guest screenings. Travis Chappell, the founder of Guestio, notes that while people regularly pay PR agencies to be guests on podcasts, the money is better spent by contacting the podcaster directly.

“I started to realize that these podcasters worked hard to build that audience and then this agency made money for charging this client for reservations,” he said. “The only person who doesn’t make money is someone who takes the time to build an audience in the first place.”
