The Canadian Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS) has warned members of Canadian parliament (MPs) of increasing “anti-government” and “anti-authority” sentiments since the virus pandemic began in Wuhan.
CSIS said it has seen an increase in ideologically motivated violent extremism, or IMVE, in the last two years of the coronavirus pandemic, arguing that threats to politicians and other government officials have also increased.
“Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, IMVE activity has been fueled by the rise of harsh authority and anti-government rhetoric, often rooted in the weapon of conspiracy theories,” said CSIS Deputy Director Cheri Henderson. CBC reported. .
“CSIS is seeing a dramatic increase in threats of violence against elected government officials and employees,” Henderson said, adding that CSIS is doing more to monitor extremism.

Michael Duhem, Deputy Commander of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), said the Highlanders had noticed an increase in IMVE, but that the events were not coordinated by groups but were instead motivated by personal and “highly individualized ideologies”.
Lesley Soper, director general of homeland security policy for the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, said extremists from a variety of backgrounds are raising their voices.
“It may be due to what we traditionally call right-wing extremism. This may be motivated by other factors; against authority. This may be motivated by other social factors,” he said.

However, when Soper and CSIS officials came under pressure from the massive attacks on churches across Canada by Conservative MP Dane Lloyd over the summer, they dismissed the violent campaign as a police problem.
At least 68 churches across Canada were burned or damaged in August last year.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the attacks on the church were “unacceptable”, but the outrage over the attacks was “completely understood”.
“One of my thoughts is that I understand the anger that exists against the federal government, against institutions like the Catholic Church; That’s true and totally understandable because it’s shameful history that we know so much about and try to be as good as Canadians,” Trudeau said.
