Media: Schulz’s party’s historic defeat in local elections related to his policy in Ukraine

Die Welt wrote that the Social Democratic Party, led by Chancellor Olaf Schulz, lost the regional election in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, partly because of its Ukrainian policy.

The newspaper says that “politics about Ukraine also has a role” in the elections. Thus, a survey conducted by Infratest dimap showed that only 46% of the population got it right on Schulz’s route to Ukraine.

A senior SPD member said that after the party’s defeat, a public debate could begin about the correctness of the prime minister’s current policy.

Another representative of the Social Democratic Party expressed his concern that the unsuccessful result in the regional election could lead to disputes (differences) within the ruling federal coalition.

According to the results of parliamentary elections in the region held in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) won with 35.7% of the vote. The lowest result in the history of the Social Democratic Party (led by Schulz) was 26.7% of the vote, with the Greens in third place, with 18.2% of the electorate support.
