“I can’t do this job anymore.” This is how the well-known Russian pivot, presenter and journalist Zhanna Agalakova, who worked for the channel owned by the Kremlin, presented her bosses days after the war in Ukraine began. Accusing the television station of “zombifying” the population, the communication professional opposed the lack of freedom of the press that exists in Russia.
This Friday, in an interview with the BBC, the journalist repeated the accusations and left an appeal to Russian citizens: “Turn off the TV”. “It’s a brainwashing machine,” he said, advising the public to “look for other sources of information.” “Go online and open your heart.”
In keeping with her opposition to the military conflict, Zhanna Agalakova described the war as “evil” and synonymous with “death”. “It’s like there are two worlds, two planets”he noted, confessing that he still watches Russian news.
The programs of the state channels paint two “different planets”. In one of them there are “ruins, total disaster and tragedy,” said the journalist, who said that, on the other “planet”, the Russian forces are “received with flowers by the local population” and it is “every victory”. ”: “It’s a positive and wonderful thing.”
“These two worlds do not come together and I am amazed how they manage to do so”noted Zhanna Agalakova, who called the way in which the Russian media manage to “brainwash the population” “unbelievable.”
