German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Tuesday that Germany was working on a deal with Greece in which Athens would deliver old military equipment to Ukraine and receive armored vehicles from Germany to compensate.
THE Germany has faced criticism for its reluctance to deliver heavy weapons to Ukraine, which the government rejects.arguing that other NATO countries that are delivering old military equipment, particularly from the Soviet era, to kyiv are being compensated with modern material provided by Berlin.
Scholz recalled, on Tuesday, an agreement already signed with the Czech Republic and, at the end of a meeting in Brussels, agreed with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to draw up a similar treaty in the near future.
The agreement must be calibrated between the defense ministries of the two countries, to be put into practice as soon as possible, seeking to help Ukraine resist Russian invasion.
The German chancellor also said that he had also spoken with his Polish counterpart about a similar situation.
The military offensive launched in the early hours of February 24 by Russia in Ukraine has already caused more than 14 million people to flee their homes. more than eight million internally displaced persons and more than 6.8 million to neighboring countries – according to the latest UN data, which places this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).
