Twenty-four people were killed and some 60 wounded on Sunday in Cameroon, allegedly at the hands of armed separatists, according to a local source, some 560 kilometers northwest of Yaoundé, near the Nigerian border.
Separatists ‘attacked Obonyi II village with firearms on Sunday’confirmed Ekwalle Martin, mayor of the town, quoted by Agence France-Presse. “The balance is 24 dead and at least 62 wounded,” he added.
“The separatists wanted the villagers to pay them money every month, these they refused and were attackedsaid the same source.
The attack was confirmed by a member of the local administration, who requested anonymity, and that at least 15 civilians were killed.
The north-west and south-west of Cameroon are mainly populated by the country’s anglophone minority, some of which feel marginalized by the country’s francophone majority, President Paul Biya, now 89, ruled with an “iron fist” for almost 40 years.
Since 2017, separatist groups and the Cameroonian army have been engaged in a bloody conflict, in which civilians are often the victims.
