A number of scientists have confirmed that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which causes global warming, continues to rise steadily and broke records in the month of May, according to the New York Times.
Scientists have said that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is now 50 percent higher than in the pre-industrial era and the burning of oil, gas and coal began in the late 19th century.
US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials have indicated that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the highest in at least 4 million years.
Gas concentrations reached nearly 421 parts per million in May as power plants, vehicles and farms around the world continued to emit massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. And emissions were 36.3 billion tons in 2021, the highest level in history.
An increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will lead to a warming of the planet, which can lead to major environmental disasters such as floods, droughts and forest fires.
The rise in carbon dioxide levels is yet another indication of the world’s failure to meet the main goal of the Paris climate summit in 2015 – to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Peter Tans, Senior Scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Global Monitoring Laboratory, said that although carbon dioxide levels declined somewhat around 2020 during the economic downturn caused by the corona virus pandemic, that decline did not continue in the long term. and carbon dioxide increased again at the same rate as in previous years.
Carbon dioxide levels change throughout the year, increasing as plants die and decay in autumn and winter, and decreasing in spring and summer as growing plants take up the gas through photosynthesis. The peak is reached in May each year, before plant growth picks up in the northern hemisphere.
