The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, announced this Wednesday the appointment of 31 heads of delegation of the European Union in third countries, including Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Timor-Leste, including the election of a Portuguese diplomat for Niger .
In a statement, the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU’s diplomatic corps, announces that the High Representative for Foreign Policy has appointed the Latvian Artis Bertulis to lead the European bloc’s delegation in Guinea-Bissau, the Italian Antonino Maggiore in Mozambique. and the German Marc Fiedrich to Timor-Leste, while the Portuguese diplomat Salvador Pinto de França Roux will be the head of the EU delegation in Niger.
The future EU representative in Guinea-Bissau is currently Ambassador of Latvia to India and Sri Lanka, having previously held the same position in Italy, Albania, Malta and San Marino, and was permanent representative of Latvia to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Bertulis succeeds the Portuguese Sónia Neto, who has held the position for three years.
The new head of the EU delegation in Mozambique, Antonino Maggiore, is currently the Italian Ambassador to Zambia, Malawi and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), having also been head of division of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
For his part, the new head of the EU delegation in Dili, Fiedrich, is currently Acting Director of the Service for Foreign Policy Instruments of the European Commissionhaving worked at the beginning of his career in the EU delegation in Venezuela.
Among the 31 new heads of delegation appointed this Wednesday, are a Portuguesethe diplomat Salvador Pinto da França Roux, currently head of the Politics, Press and Information section of the EU delegation in Mali, and who has already served as deputy head of mission and head of the political section at the Portuguese embassy in Egypt, and who will lead the Union delegation in Niger.
From the list published this Wednesday by the SEAE, we also highlight the appointment of two new EU Heads of Delegation in Russia and Chinatwo powers with which the European Union currently maintains tense relations.
For Moscow, Frenchman Roland Galharague was nominated, Current French Ambassador to Malaysia and that, in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was responsible for Russia and Ukraine, while the Spanish Jorge Toledo Albiñana, current Spanish ambassador to Japan and former Secretary of State for European Affairs of the Spanish Government, will be the new EU Ambassador in Beijing .
The European External Action Service indicates that these appointments will be formalized as soon as the authorities of each country give their agreement (approval).
