Russians consider using prisoners of war to demine Mariupol

The Ukrainian secret services published a phone call between two Russian intelligence agents discussing the possibility of using Ukrainian prisoners of war to demine the city of Mariupol, the Telegraph reports.

In the conversation, which was intercepted by Ukrainian services, one of the men says that he is willing to send prisoners of war who are in a detention center in Melitopol to “help demine the city of Mariupol naturally”.

“We have to find a way to use them in a way that they can serve the country,” adds the man. The colleague responds by suggesting that the prisoners be used to “dig trenches”.

Land in the city of Mariupol, which is currently occupied by Russian forces, is currently mined. The Russian Defense Minister announced at the end of May that the Azov port region will already be completely demined.

The Geneva Convention prohibits prisoners of war from being subjected to forced labor.
