The Tunisian Interior Ministry announced on Friday that there was confirmed information that there were plans to target President Qais Saeed, while a terrorist element was arrested before carrying out an attack on a sensitive security point.
Tunisian Interior Ministry spokeswoman Fadhil al-Khalifa told a news conference in the Tunisian capital that a terrorist attack in Tunisia had been foiled.
“The wolves only attacked a security checkpoint in front of the sensitive headquarters, where a neutral operation and the perpetrator were arrested and the tools of the crime were seized,” he added, without giving further details.
He said that there is serious information and its sources intersect and its acceptance rate has reached the level of public opinion.
He said that the announcement of these threats was made after their disclosure, noting that the threats have gone beyond the planning and reporting stage of the parties involved and have reached the initial stages of operation.
He added that investigations were ongoing, adding that more details needed to be gathered about the threats, as he stressed that their aim was to undermine Tunisia’s public security.
He stressed that work is underway to eliminate and dismantle this plan.
The Tunisian official did not disclose the nature of the threats or the parties behind them, saying only that there was an association calling itself “Nama Tunisia” which was illegally receiving funding from foreign parties.
One of its members belongs to a political party, he said.
Despite the threats, the official confirmed that the Tunisian presidency is working as usual, as President Qais Saeed attended the anniversary of the founding of the army earlier today.
