Emmanuel Macron’s party wants to inscribe in the Constitution the right to voluntary interruption of pregnancy

French President Emmanuel Macron’s party, now known as Renaissance, announced this Saturday that it will present a bill to integrate the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) into the French Constitution, following the controversial decision of the United States Supreme Court. Joined.

This means that also here in France we make decisions so that tomorrow there are no setbacks. For this reason, starting today, my group will present a proposal for a constitutional law to inscribe respect for the IVG in our Constitution”, announced this morning Aurore Bergé, leader of the deputies of the president’s party on FranceInter radio.

The deputy, for whom “nothing is impossible” in the regression of women’s rights, warned that many deputies of the National Union of Marine Le Pen, which now has a group of 89 elected in the National Assembly, “oppose women’s access to IVG”, and one must not “take any risk” and guarantee this right.

In France, the right to IVG was approved in 1975 through a law that became known as the Veil Law because it was vehemently defended by Simone Veil, then Minister of Health, under the presidency of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.

Veil, a Holocaust survivor and resister, faced opposition from some of his political camp, having finally managed to pass the law that allowed the legalization of IVG for all women.

The Supreme Court of the United States on Friday annulled the protection of the right to abortion that has governed the country since 1973, allowing each state to decide whether to maintain or prohibit the voluntary termination of pregnancy.

The magistrates of the Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, decided to reverse the decision in the case “Roe v. Wade,” which protected women’s right to abortion as constitutional.

The United States Supreme Court overturns the right to abortion. The legal vacuum in the coming months could become “a nightmare”

The decision caused an uproar in France, with women’s rights groups organizing a rally in support of American women on Friday afternoon at Place République.
