22 bodies found in clandestine graves in Mexico

Mexican authorities have exhumed 22 bodies from clandestine graves found on June 18 in a tourist area in the western Mexican state of Michoacán.

The Michoacan state attorney general’s office said Friday it had counted 22 bodies, though work will continue through the weekend to see if there are more graves.

The clandestine cemetery was discovered last Saturday, in a village known as Los Negritos, in the municipality of Michoacán de Villamar, a tourist destination due to the existence of hot springs.

Mexico faces a wave of violence with homicides, disappearances and insecurity.

So far this year, the state of Michoacán has recorded 1,385 violent homicides related to organized crime, according to authorities.

Last year, Mexican authorities recorded 33,308 homicides, after two very violent years, with 34,690 murders in 2019 and 34,554 in 2020.
